About Victoria
Hi, I am a fully qualified and insured Acupuncturist and Naturopath. I studied for four years at an accredited college for natural health in London. As well as Acupuncture I also studied Biomedicine and naturopathy, so I have a sufficient understanding of the human body and its functioning from both a Western and Eastern perspective.

Before my studies, I spent many years travelling around the world experiencing rich cultures with their own unique approach to health and medicine, which led me to my interest in holistic health and undergoing the extensive education required for building my own practice in natural health.

I am a firm believer of our bodies' natural healing abilities, with the right aid and tools. With the raging rise of pharmaceuticals, I wanted to be able to offer an alternative approach, which was gentle and nourishing to our bodies on all levels.

Everybody is treated uniquely in Acupuncture as all bodies work differently, react and respond differently, your treatment reflects the individuality of your person. Treatments are tailored made specifically for you, with the considerate use of different methods and modalities that I have full training and experience in providing.
I treat a vast range of symptoms and conditions, but I also see the healing process as a time for renewal and revival. My clinic's setting is one which has an emphasis on therapeutic care. It is a place and a time for relaxation and de-stress whilst your energy systems get realigned. When you visit my clinic, you will find a comfortable, warm, welcoming environment, soft lighting and music as it is my view that wellbeing plays an important part in the healing process. You can be sure that you can feel right at home here, with an attentive ear, and careful consideration of your needs.

I am consistently driving to expand my knowledge in helping people find the optimum health in all health matters. However, I have a keen interest in the treatment of women's health matters and am currently working towards specialising in this area.
About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient form of Traditional Chinese Medicine dating back over 3000 years. It is the Chinese ideology that pain and illness derive from energetic imbalances within the body which have derived over time.

Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine is vastly different to that of the Western medical system. One diagnosis in Western medicine could be several in Chinese medicine; a disharmony within one energetic system can be a precursor for another, like a domino effect, which is why a person may experience seemingly unrelated symptoms.
The emphasis in Chinese Medicine is treating the root cause, not just the symptoms which means that in treatment the practitioner may have to work within layers of pathology.
Acupuncture treats a wide range of symptoms and illnesses which has been diagnosed or undiagnosed.
Acupuncture is most known for pain management covering all aspects of pain-related complaints from back pain, joint pain, abdominal discomfort, headaches and migraines, menstrual pain, dental pain, injury, sciatic pain post-surgical pain, nerve pain, and more.

The use of Acupuncture in pain management is widely accepted and praised in all areas of medical care, including that of WHO (World Health Organization) and the NHS.
From the Western perspective: Acupuncture demonstrates an increase in the secretion of endogenous opiates, such as dynorphin, endorphin, encephalin, and the release of corticosteroids, alleviating pain and accelerating the healing process.

It is also accredited widely for its efficacy in women's health. Acupuncture is renowned for helping to regulate hormones and improve blood flow can have tremendous effects on all hormone-related symptoms: which includes irregular bleeding, menopausal symptoms, heavy bleeding, pain, cramps, nausea, and any other menstrual associated symptom.

Other well-being and health-related complaints that Acupuncture can help with are: digestive issues, sleep patterns, respiratory complaints, skin problems, and general wellbeing.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
The energy better known as ‘Qi’ In Chinese medicine runs through pathways in the body called Meridians. On each meridian are a number of ‘Acupuncture points’. It is through these points that an Acupuncturist can access the meridian and the Qi that runs through it. Each meridian is associated with a particular energetic function, essential for homeostasis within the body.
These pathways and functions are intrinsically linked and require a harmonious relationship for each function to work efficiently. When a function is impaired, illness derives. It is the complex knowledge of these meridian pathways and the associated functions that are the foundation of an Acupuncture treatment. There are 361 known acupuncture points, although typically only 5-20 points are used in a treatment. These points are selected specifically to make a bespoke treatment tailored to each individual's needs.
In a Western sense, inserting needles into these points has a positive effect on nerve pathways, muscles, and tissues and releases our bodies’ natural pain relief and feel-good hormones, improving circulation and boosting immunity.
What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
Acupuncture is generally a painless experience, although you may experience unfamiliar sensations which will be discussed with your practitioner prior to the treatment, to put you fully at ease.

Side effects are limited; you may feel slightly achy or experience mild bruising where the needles have been placed.
Some patients feel extremely relaxed after a treatment whilst some are energised - there is no right or wrong. If you do experience any adverse effects, it's important to let your practitioner know prior to your next treatment.
What To Expect
In the initial appointment, an in-depth consultation will be taken covering the complaint and all associated symptoms, as well as your general health history and other aspects of your health. Chinese medicine looks at the whole picture of a person.

‘Treat the person, not just the disease'

Palpation and observation of the area affected and/or meridian will be a part of the diagnosis protocol. This is where the practitioner will inspect the area with their hands with gentle pressure to feel the condition of the tissues, such as softness or hardness, any heat fluctuations, color changes, or others. This would not omit to the groin area or parts of the body that are deemed unsuitable for reasons such as open sores or severe sensitivity.
Acupuncture practitioners will also look at your tongue. The tongue is an essential part in Chinese diagnosis as it reflects many crucial aspects of our interior. Alike reflexology (another Chinese Medicine art form) different areas of the tongue reflect different energetic systems and can show the practitioner what/where is being affected and indications to the pathology disrupting it. They will be looking at the colour, shape, coating, and other identifying characteristics to support them in their diagnosis.
Another crucial part is pulse diagnosis: there are many different characteristics to a ‘feel’ of a pulse in a Chinese perspective. The practitioner will take the pulse from three positions on each wrist at three different depths. To ‘read’ the characteristics and aid in their diagnosis. Once a diagnosis has been determined a bespoke treatment will be administered.
The needles are kept in for around 20 to 30-minutes. All of the needles come from sealed packaging and are single-use and disposed of in accordance with appropriate guidelines for ultimate hygienic care and attention. Alongside the needles, other complementary therapies may be added such as the use of red lamp therapy or moxibustion which brings heat into the meridians being treated.

How many treatments you require will depend on the diagnosis and how your condition progresses. Some people feel the benefits just after one treatment but for a chronic issue, a course of 6-8 is recommended in 1 – 2 weekly treatments. Many people will find that after a few sessions their symptoms improve, and it may mean needing treatment with less frequency.

Chinese Medicine also has a big emphasis on food as medicine, dietary advice may be given that is complementary to your condition and constitution.

Although Acupuncture is a safe therapy and doesn't require any pre or post-treatment protocols, it is suggestible that if you are frequently lightheaded it may be advisable to not drive or do any heavy labour after treatment unless you feel fit to do so. Drinking plenty of fluids afterward can support the detoxification of your body and support the effects of acupuncture.
